Black Friday's roots go back to the mid-20th century in Philadelphia, USA, where the rush hour on the Friday after Thanksgiving began to be known as Black Friday. Later, the term was extended to accounting, where the colour was used to refer to records. Losses at the beginning of the year were marked in red, while Christmas sales turned the year into a profit and the colour was black. The Friday after Thanksgiving had become the annual financial turning point. 

Black Friday was originally an event for brick-and-mortar stores, but as it expanded, it spread to online retailers. Don't forget online retailers' own event, Cyper Monday, immediately after Black Friday.
