Cadmium

Cadmium has been used in metal and plastic jewellery and grocery products as a colour (especially yellow-orange-pun) and as a coating. Cadmium has been used in the galvanising of steel to prevent it from rusting, this has been abandoned because of its toxicity.

A metal toxic to humans. Cadmium accumulates in the internal organs, especially the kidneys and liver.


The cadmium content of the metal parts of jewellery must be less than 0.01 p-%. Cadmium is used in jewellery solder and as an alloying metal. There are also restrictions on the cadmium content of certain types of plastics and paints.
