MESSENGER PENDANT NECKLACE

Caduceus or kerykeion is a messenger's staff around which two snakes are symmetrically coiled, facing each other. A pair of wings is also often placed on the rod. This symbol is also widely known as a symbol of economy and trade.

  • Choice of two colours
  • Chain length: 64cm + 5cm extension chain
  • Chain width: 3mm
  • Pendant dimensions: 31mm x 19mm
  • Material: surgical steel / 18k gold plated surgical steel (316L steel)

HERMES ROD / MERCURY ROD

In Greek mythology, Hermes was depicted as carrying a kerykeion in his hand. Similarly, in Roman mythology, Mercurius was depicted carrying a kerykeion in his hand. In Greek mythology, Iris, the goddess of the dawn, also carried a kerykeion. Iris was the messenger of the gods and the sun.

SYMBOL OF TRADE AND ECONOMY

In modern pictorial symbolism, the caduceus is a symbol of trade and economy. In the United States, it is also sometimes confused with the symbol of medicine, the staff of Asclepius. However, they are two different symbols used in different contexts. The rod also appears in a simpler form in ancient art, where snakes are not depicted at all.

Is surgical steel a good material?

Surgical steel is a popular material for jewellery because it is durable and lasts a lifetime. The steel itself does not wear in use, but the coatings on it, such as gold plating (14K or 18K) or other metallic coatings, can wear over time. The amount of wear and tear is influenced by the way the jewellery is worn and the PH of the wearer's skin, which is individual.

The durability of gold plating and other coatings varies; they generally hold up well to wear, but are not as long-lasting as the surgical steel itself. In particular, copper coatings can wear more quickly than steel coatings. Surgical steel can also be safely used in the shower or sauna, which makes it more comfortable to use. However, to prevent wear and tear and to ensure the longevity of your jewellery, it is important to be aware of your own usage habits and skin characteristics.
